What have I been working on…

I’ve been busy working on projects I will share in their entirety later but I will give you a sneak peak now.

Quilt National

I finished a quilt I made to enter Quilt National 25. QN is the most prestigious art quilt competition in the world. It happens every two years. They are very strict about not having your quilt exhibited anywhere before the competition. I usually do not have anything ready that I haven’t exhibited or that I feel good enough about so I usually do not enter. This year it was a big goal of mine to enter and I did it! Not only I did I enter, I feel so good about it! It is also the beginning of a new series. It is very different from my architecture quilts. It also uses a lot of different techniques. The background is mostly pieced and the figures are appliquéd. In this quilt there is also beading, hand embroidery and bobbin work. Can’t wait to show you the entire thing! Those in my mailing list already got to see it. Hint Hint! 😉 To join my mailing list, click here.

Stitching Together History

I’m working on a small quilt to enter in the Virginia Quilt Museum exhibit Stitching Through History. The exhibit is to showcase important people and places in Virginia’s history. I’m making a quilt of Virginia Beach’s Neptune sculpture. It was an unexpected and memorable surprise when I visited. It is also fitting with my new series. Can you guess what it is about yet? I was trying to make it 3D. Have it stand out from the wall but it made me realize there is a whole in my sewing knowledge that I will need to remedy soon!

Secret Commission

Another exciting project I’m working on is a commission. I’m not allowed to show you the whole thing until the big reveal next year but I here is a little snippet. This is just the computer design. I haven’t started any work on fabric yet. The quilt depicts a landmark with the city in the back and a strand of DNA. In my regular job, I work as a designer for the National Cancer Institute and very often I need to design a DNA strand. It is fun how my two worlds are colliding in this quilt.

As you can see it has been very busy in my quilt studio this month. And I’m not including having new floors installed in the entire house and three exhibits. Uff! 😣 I need a break but it is not looking like a break is coming anytime soon. I’m also trying to make a Quilt for QuiltCon 25 which I need to finish in 5 weeks and I barely started. The life of a competitive quilt artist…

On a sad note…

One of my studio assistants, Stitch, went over the rainbow bridge a few days ago. He had kidney problems and it was expected but it is always hard to say goodbye. Thank you Stitch for all the precious moments.
