Make a list!

Last month I joined an artist accountability group. The group is a group of quilt artists at different stages that tries to push you to keep working towards your goals. I joined half way and I didn’t think I had accomplished much until I made a list of all the things I had done in the past three weeks. It blew my mind.

  • Opened a business bank account - I made some income from quilt sales and commissions (yay!) last year and while preparing taxes and looking at some advise, it was highly recommended to open a separate bank account just for business expenses

  • Leesburg Street Banner - The town of Leesburg, VA is having an art show and had a competition for artist to submit art for their street banners. I entered and passed the first approval.

  • ArteVoces Interview - This was probably the most exciting part of the month. I was part of a panel of Hispanic artists in DC for ArteVoces. It was a great experience and met some really cool artists.

  • Join Frederick Arts Councils - One of my goals is to get more connected in the local art scene so I joined two local art groups

  • Finished a quilt for a quilt swap - Quilting is a very social hobby. Quilters are always getting together and exchanging things. I usually don’t participate on swaps because I am busy making quilts for exhibitions. My guild the DC Modern Quilt Guild is participating in a quilt swap with other guilds around the country called SEWN (stands for South East West North) and the theme is abstract. It sounded interesting so I decided to join and get a mental break from my current series.

The flower design was done in an improvisational technique inspired by Sherri Lynn Wood. All the fabrics except the background are scraps leftover from other projects.

  • Delivered art to Chesapeake Art Center - There is an exhibit in honor of Women’s History Month at the Chesapeake Art Center and I delivered art yesterday. It is the first time one of my quilts from the series Not What I Taught You will be exhibited. Let’s see what will be the response.

Exhibition Coming Up!

The exhibit Crafting Their Future is an exhibit at the Chesapeake Art Center in Brooklyn Park, MD from March 12th to April 14th.

The exhibition is in honor of Women’s History Month and highlights how traditional practices that were once viewed as domestic tasks have become vital forms of cultural expression and economic empowerment. Nothing describes my quilts better than that!

There will be a reception on March 20th from 6-8 PM and I’m planning to be there. Come and say hi.

It has been a productive month even if it didn’t feel like it so the lesson is when you are feeling like you are getting nothing done actually sit down and write the things you have accomplished lately. The list may surprise you. :)
