Governor’s Award

It has been awhile since I post but it has been a busy time for me. I took a trip to Arizona, my mom is visiting from Puerto Rico and all the Thanksgiving celebrations ended. But of all those events, the most important is that I was awarded one of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Disability Culture. It was an honor being among other amazing people in the disability community that have achieved so much. I’m there thinking “…but I just make quilts”. I need to learn how to take a compliment and I know I have worked hard to be where I am. Being disabled does not make it easy.

The highlight of the day was meeting Governor Wes Moore. He is pretty impressive and the nicest person. I made a quilt for him and I was kicking myself because with everything going on, I forgot to take a picture of the finished quilt. After looking at pictures of the event, I got a picture from the photographer better than one I could have taken myself.

The sign language letters spell out Frederick and it is a representation of a sculpture in town.

I made a video with some of the moments in the ceremony.

I want to thank my family and friends that are always there to help with anything I need and I couldn’t be where I am without them. Also thanks to the Maryland Department of Disabilities for organizing these awards and reminding everyone that disabled people contribute great things to our society.
